The Romans introduced underfloor heating to the British Isles centuries ago, but it’s only recently it’s become popular with our Sheffield clients. They tell us they want energy-efficient heating that provides an equal distribution of warmth throughout the home.
Radiators have been popular for a while now, but we’re hearing increasing concerns about their poor record on allergies. Convection heating tends to pull dust into the atmosphere, which can exacerbate asthma and allergies. Also, centrally heated air tends to dry out quite quickly, which is obviously a worry if children suffer from eczema.
Underfloor heating creates radiant heating. The heat rises naturally from the grid of water pipes laid beneath the floor. Rather than heating the air, it heats the objects it encounters. This provides dust free, oxygen rich, evenly distributed heating.
The use of a high quality liquid screed ensures that there are no ‘cold spots’ in the room. As the heat rises naturally, it’s not difficult to achieve constant temperatures between 20-24 . The temperature of the water heating the pipes is lower than when using radiators, which leads to energy efficiencies.
